Is your little one fascinated by the ocean? From waves to plants to animals, the ocean is so interesting! With just a few materials, this project creates a chart for learning more about the ocean's layers.

Start with:

  • Cardboard
  • Paint
  • Paintbrush
  • Scissors
  • Letter Tiles, optional

Create it!

Step 1: Cut a rectangle from cardboard.

Step 2: Cut an additional piece of cardboard the same dimensions. Cut this cardboard into the layers of the ocean - trench, abyss, midnight, twilight and sunlight. We also kept one small strip on the top to use for a title piece.

Step 3: Paint the abyss, midnight, twilight and sunlight layers. We used black for abyss and then shades of blue - darker to lighter - for the midnight, twilight and sunlight layers.

Step 4: Glue the layers to the original cardboard piece in order - bottom to top - trench, abyss, midnight, twilight, sunlight.

Step 5: Use the letter tiles to spell out each of the layers. Practice spelling or ask your child to identify the letters.

Discuss animals that live in the different zones. This is a fun lesson by itself and would also be a wonderful part of an even larger ocean unit study!
